The ultimate in gentle cruising, the short breaks from Whitchurch have very few locks and pass through peaceful countryside.
Cruising west there are only two locks and a few lift-bridges before you need to start your return, even on a four night midweek break. As Shropshire gives way to Wales the scenery becomes steeper, though the canal route does not. Instead the route follows contours along the hillsides and in 4 nights you may even experience the two magnificent aqueducts, firstly Chirk, together with a 450 metre tunnel and then the superb Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, one of the wonders of the Inland Waterways.
For those wanting a little more activity, cruising east towards the English end of this fascinating canal is equally beautiful countryside but with a few more locks including the impressive 3-lock staircase set at Grindley Brook.
